BOOKS

These books were not written for commercial purposes. Ray has paid for their production and, in the past, has given them away, free of charge, to people whom he believed would read them. This has become an expensive exercise so he has now arranged for this website to be created to make them available for download. You can download each book as a .pdf below.

TYPE 1 - PRACTICAL

LIFETIME LEARNING

Lifetime learning

For more years than I can remember I have had the habit of reading a chapter of the book of Proverbs each day. Conveniently, Proverbs has thirty-one chapters, one for each day of the longest month, so I read the chapter that is the day’s date. This habit, combined with the habit of reading and re-reading the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation and studying the Scriptures from a subject-related perspective has, over the years, helped me gain an understanding of the message the Scriptures bring and the part played by the book of Proverbs in the process.

Reading the book of Proverbs will almost certainly lead you to the conclusion that God intends us to be involved in a lifelong pursuit of wisdom. He intends that we continuously increase our store of it (and the knowledge, understanding, prudence, discretion it brings) and that we make it operational in our lives.

In this small volume I have endeavoured to promote the pursuit of wisdom by opening up and discussing the purpose and contents of the book of Proverbs and suggesting simple methods of adopting the practice of lifetime learning. I think this book is suitable reading for people of all ages.

Included in the book is an alphabetically arranged list of subjects touched on in the book of Proverbs with chapter and verse references to the light shed on each subject.

DEPRESSION - IS THERE A CURE?

Depression, is there a cure?

Depression is a major problem. It would be foolish to suppose that a "cure" exists for the varieties of major depressive disorders that trouble so many people. I am not claiming that there is a permanent "cure" for any form of depression but I am suggesting that there are things we can learn from the Word of God that can help people cope with bouts of depression or tendancies toward depression.

Whilst fulfilling a preaching engagement in northern Victoria, Australia some years ago I felt led to deliver an address on the subject of “Depression”. Response to the address amazed me as person after person told me that they had suffered from one form of depression or another. A doctor with a general medical practice in the locality told me that at least fifty percent of his patients suffered from nothing more and nothing less than depression.

As I gathered more information about depression and noticed that the Scriptures say a great deal about it I felt compelled to write this little book.

Some significant people brought before us in the Scriptures had battles with depression, people like David, Elijah, Naomi, Job and Jeremiah. This surprised me, but what surprised me most was the pattern of events that led to their recoveries. I say “pattern” of events because the similarities between the paths of recovery are quite startling. So much so that I considered it worth recording. I feel sure that any believer who suffers from depression could benefit from reading about their experiences and paying attention to related passages of the Word of God.

This is, therefore, not a medical or psychological treatise nor does it give advice that seeks to replace counselling or treatment by qualified professionals in those fields, but feedback from people who have read it has encouraged me to conclude that the book was worth writing.

TYPE 2 - DOCTRINAL

ONE FOLD AND ONE SHEPHERD

One fold and one shepherd

God has revealed to us “the mystery of His will”, that “In the dispensation of the fullness of times He might gather together in one all things in Christ”. (Ephesians 1.9 +10). That “one” is “the church” (Ephesians 1.22). It is critical to the understanding of the purposes of God, and to the formation of sound doctrine, to understand what the “church” is.

This short book looks briefly, but fairly and squarely, at Scriptures that make it clear that the “church” consists of ALL redeemed people, Jew and Gentile, bond and free, male and female, old testament and new testament.

In my opinion, any other belief runs contrary to the clear teaching of Scripture and leads to a multitude of other doctrinal errors.

TYPE 3 - PROPHETICAL

YOUR REDEMPTION DRAWETH NIGH

Your redemption draweth nigh

The return of Jesus Christ is the most important event in the future of this world. Every individual, every family, every tribe and every nation will be dramatically affected by it. God has not left us in doubt about either the certainty of that event or the challenges it presents to us. All indications are that it will happen soon.

This volume is not for light reading. It sets out to draw the reader’s attention to significant prophecies that have recently been fulfilled. We are then taken on a journey through prophecies we can expect to be fulfilled in the near future. The journey continues to the end of “time” as we know it, and unfolds the fulfilment of prophecies that take us into the eternal state.

Naturally, as the author, I state my own opinion, but, in the interest of the search for truth the format of the book leaves blank pages adjacent to the pages of text to allow the reader to make notes and come to his or her own conclusions from the Scriptures quoted, or any other Scripture the reader considers to be relevant.

Theological terminology has been avoided where possible and definitions have been given of theological jargon which could not be avoided.

An honest effort has been made to let the subject matter flow smoothly without being side-tracked to other related subjects, so an “Appendix“ has been included to make my views on related subjects clear.

May you read this book and profit spiritually from it.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS RELATING TO THE RETURN OF JESUS CHRIST

Q and A relating to the return of Jesus Christ

My book titled “Your Redemption Draweth Nigh” circulated fairly widely through Europe, Asia, Africa and America and generated email correspondence from readers. Many interesting questions were raised. Shortly after the release of the book I was invited to the Philippines to speak in several churches on issues dealt with in it. On that tour preaching sessions were followed by “Question and Answer” forums and these raised other interesting matters. The outcome was that I produced this little volume.

Several of the questions were asked more than once in different places so they might be among the “most asked questions” on the subject, but, in all, the book addresses forty two questions. Perhaps a question that is in your mind is among them.

MAKE IT PLAIN

Make it plain

As I write these few paragraphs in July, 2014 I find it difficult to believe that I wrote this book some forty years ago. I note, from the “Foreword to the Second Edition”, that I updated it fourteen years ago and I also note that when, earlier this year, I was asked for permission to have it translated into Tagalog and printed and distributed in the Philippines, I added an “Appendix”.

The current form is the updated version and has the appendix.

The book is based on the prophecy given to Habakkuk.  He was disturbed at the state of the nation (Judah) and he took his concerns to God in prayer. God reveals to him that things will get worse and that trouble, such as he never dreamt of, was coming.

God goes on to reveal to him that trouble is highly organised, but, with proper preparation, it can be faced. The preparation is not to devise means of avoiding the trouble or defeating those who will bring it, but it is inward preparation that enables you to go through it. Habakkuk has to prepare himself, but he is given the job of telling the nation what God has told him. He has to “MAKE IT PLAIN” (ch.2 v.2) that everyone would understand and be ready for the trouble that is certain to come.

The Holy Spirit, in Hebrews 10.37-38, takes Habakkuk 2.3-4 and applies it to our own day as the return of Jesus Christ approaches. This is important reading for the people of God today! This is a message intended for us. We need to MAKE IT PLAIN!

BRIEF STUDY NOTES FOR THE BOOK OF THE REVELATION

Bried study notes for the book of the revelation

In their original form these notes were not made by Ray Ewart. They were notes taken by Kath McMurray, a member of Belgrave South Baptist Church (in a suburb of Melbourne, Australia). Kath attended each session of a series of talks given by Ray in 1984 when he was the interim pastor.  Her notes were so complete that Ray asked for her permission to reproduce them in book form. Kath agreed and in 1986 they were produced in two volumes (the first dealing with chapters 1 to 8 and the second with chapters 9 to 22).

Ray combined the two volumes into one and made a few alterations and additions to present them in the form you now have on this site. After a few introductory comments, and suggestions as to how the subject matter of The Revelation could be summarised, the notes follow on a chapter by chapter basis.

BOOKLET SERMONS

PROMINENT DECEPTIONS

MANY DECEPTIONS EXISTED IN THE PAST, MANY ARE HERE TODAY AND MANY WILL BE ABROAD IN THE FUTURE

Just a few days before Jesus was crucified His disciples were showing Him the buildings of the temple in Jerusalem when He told them it would be destroyed.  I can only imagine how shocked and puzzled they may have been.  It prompted them to ask Him, "Tell us,when shall these things be?  And what will be the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age?" (Matthew 24.3).  Jesus answered their questions in great detail and, in doing so, He referred to SEVEN PROMINENT DECEPTIONS we need to be aware of in the time leading up to His return.  In this booklet I have commented briefly on all seven, then commented a little more fully on what I consider to be the two that have the worst consequences.  I recommend that you read chapters 24 and 25 of Matthew's gospel before and after reading the booklet.

FAILINGS

We all have failings, whether they are inherent weaknesses or times when we fail to do the right thing.  We can learn valuable lessons by studying the Scripture records of other peoples' failings.  Knowledge of these failings, and their consequences, can help motivate us to avoid similar failings in our own lives.  In this booklet I have reflected on some of the failings of several significant Biblical characters.

THE WORDS OF AGUR (AND THEIR PLACE IN WISDOM)

The Scriptures are a veritable treasure house of wisdom.  Agur was a wise man and he had the privilege of writing a chapter of Scripture (Proverbs 30).  If you had this same privilege what subjects would you write about?  What wisdom would you like to pass on to other people?  Regardless of our gifts or the sum total of our learning we are all in need of more wisdom.  Each one of us could improve our effectiveness if we had more wisdom.  In this booklet I have commented on 14 subjects Agur addresses in the chapter he has written.  I have the commented in more detail on one of these subjects I consider to be of great importance for us to be aware of at this stage in the unfolding of the plans and purposes of God.

THE GOOD SHEPHERD AND HIS SHEEP

Jesus referred to Himself as "The Good Shepherd" and He referred to His followers as His "sheep" (John 10.11).  Sheep are interesting animals.  There is much we can learn about ourselves by studying sheep and there are valuable lessons about our relationship, as Christians, to Jesus as we study the relationship between shepherds and their sheep.  In this booklet I reflect on the lessons we can learn from these comparisons and I conclude with some thoughts on the depth and value of the individual's relationship with Jesus Christ as expressed in Psalm 23.

BOOKLET STUDIES

THE PERSON AND WORK OF JESUS CHRIST

THE MOST IMPORTANT STUDY ANYONE COULD EVER UNDERTAKE

One day everyone will know Who Jesus Christ is (Philipippians 2.5-11).  The sooner we know about Him and the more we know about Him the better it is for each one of us.  However, to know ABOUT Him has no comparison in value to actually KNOWING HIM PERSONALLY as your Saviour and Lord.  In this booklet I draw on Scripture to explain something of His Person and His Work.  No other study could be as important for a Christian.  To the Christian Jesus Christ is their all in all.  This is but a brief survey of His Person and Work, but, if you know Him personally it will strengthen your faith and encourage you in your walk with Him and your worship of Him.

TRUE HAPPINESS

WHAT IS IT? HOW DO YOU GET IT? HOW DO YOU KEEP IT?

We are privileged to have detailed notes on one of the greatest sermons ever preached by the Lord Himself (commonly referred to as "The Sermon on the Mount").  Matthew brings them to us in chapters 5, 6 and 7 of his gospel.  The sermon is crammed with amazing teaching and as you study it you can see a central theme.  Jesus reveals the secret of TRUE HAPPINESS.  The information He sets before His audience helps us to understand WHAT TRUE HAPPINESS IS!  Not only that, but it shows us HOW TO GET IT and HOW TO KEEP IT ONCE YOU HAVE GOT IT.  In these days of rush, stress and pressure true happiness is a scarce commodity.

SPIRITUAL WARFARE

Every true believer in Jesus Christ is involved in spiritual warfare. It is likely that the more active you are in living out the Christian life the more opposition you will encounter from spiritual forces opposed to God, the truth and the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ. This brief study will help you to understand where the opposition comes from, what you need to do to be prepared for it and the abundant resources God has provided for His followers to ensure that we are victorious in the spiritual battles we face.

WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN WE DIE?

A president of the U.S.A. is reported to have said, "Nothing is as sure as death and taxes." Some people are fairly successful in avoiding paying taxes. Some people are even trying to avoid death, but their efforts are doomed to fail. Scripture tells us plainly that "it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgement" (Hebrews 9.27). This study reveals, from the Word of God, what happens to us when we die and helps us to realize how important it is to be prepared for the judgement that inevitably follows death.
